Whole peanuts, raisins, hemp milk, frozen bananas, and maca root come together to create the richest, creamiest smoothie, with fresh berries on top. This smoothie takes 5 minutes to make, is seriously delicious, and also gives you a little boost of energy.

What is Maca Root?

“Maca is a plant that grows in central Peru in the high plateaus of the Andes mountains. It has been cultivated as a vegetable crop in Peru for at least 3000 years. Maca is a relative of the radish and has an odor similar to butterscotch. Its root is used to make medicine.

Maca is used for “tired blood” (anemia); chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS); and enhancing energy, stamina, athletic performance, memory, and fertility. Women use maca for female hormone imbalance, menstrual problems, and symptoms of menopause. Maca is also used for weak bones (osteoporosis), depressionstomach cancerleukemiaHIV/AIDS, tuberculosiserectile dysfunction (ED), to arouse sexual desire, and to boost the immune system.”

Just a little maca powder goes a long way.

I used raisins instead of dates for this recipe because It gives a hint of peanut butter and jelly. 🙂 so it’s like a peanut butter, jelly, banana, blizzard with fresh berries and crunchy chia seeds….yum. Sometimes the blender turns the peanuts into peanut butter balls, so every so often you’ll get a peanut butter dough ball… double yum!

You could add any kind of fruit, nut or seed you desire. I chose strawberries because that’s all that’s available at my farmers market at the moment. But peanut butter and strawberries are just as good. 🙂

You could also get fancy and add a little vanilla bean or cinnamon.

I use frozen bananas to eliminate the need for ice cubes, it’s way creamier and tastier!

I just peel ripe bananas and put them in a freezer bag so they’re easy to throw into the blender. If you leave the skin on, let the banana thaw a bit, before you try to take the skin off.

Just  a pint of this stuff makes me full for hours with no sugar crash. I like to have it for breakfast after drinking lots of fluids, but I suppose it would good for an after noon snack or dessert as well.
